The continuing discovery of early fragments of New Testament books corroborates this early dating. When visiting with Bible Wallace, Greg Koukl and I asked him about the skepticism on the part of books like Bart Ehrman related to early dating. We asked Wallace if there was some specific manuscript world that inclined people to deny the early dating of the Gospel accounts. Wallace said there was no such evidence. We then asked why people continued to deny the early dating if, in fact, we were continuing to find early fragments and there was no contrary manuscript evidence. It turns out that the late dating of the gospels is due primarily to a denial of supernaturalism. One of the primary reasons why skeptics date the books when than 70AD is the fact that Jesus predicted the destruction of the Bible in the gospel accounts i.

Can any of the texts of the New Testament, other than Acts, 1 Thessalonians or 2 Peter for which I already have evidence , be interpreted in such a way that they MUST have been written before the end of the first century?

One of the most important indicators of the date of a manuscript is the presence of any references to chronologically known events. For example, the account in Acts about Paul’s involvement and arrest over an incident at the Jerusalem Temple indicates that the Temple had not been destroyed yet. Someone challenging this reference would have to come up with some extraordinary contradicting evidence.

However, the absence of a reference to a major event, doesn’t necessarily mean that a manuscript preceded the event, and this is where historical contexts are subject to argument–would the writer have been expected to mention the event in the context of the subject of the manuscript. In letters written between AD, three prominent church fathers [Clement, Ignatius, and Polycarp] quoted passages from 25 of the 27 New Testament books. The problem is that the destruction of the temple in 70 AD is not mentioned anywhere in the New Testament books. Jesus Christ prophesies this, yet there is no mention of its fulfillment. How strange it would be to leave out something that helps prove Jesus is who he said he was.

All the gospels, Acts, and Hebrews at least mention the temple but they do not say anything about its destruction.

Dating historical events that occurred in the Old Testament is notoriously difficult. After this, the kings of Israel and Judah are recorded independently in the ninth century BC annals of Assyria. Prior to this, events are difficult to date accurately. However, most Egyptian archaeologists today readily admit that these lists and the resultant chronology are inaccurate. In particular, it appears that the Egyptian Third Intermediate Period traditionally dated between BC and BC was nowhere near as long as originally thought.

The 21st and 22nd Egyptian dynasties, for example, while traditionally dated as following on from each other, are now thought to have existed at the same time. Traditional dates are still widely used and accepted by many scholars, while others such as Peter James and David Rohl have more recently put forward alternative dates. For a detailed account of difficulties with traditional dating see Peter James, Centuries of Darkness: A challenge to the conventional chronology of Old World archaeology, Jonathan Cape, Go to next page.

Scholars have long debated how much of the Hebrew bible was composed before the destruction of Jerusalem and the Kingdom of Judah in BCE. While scholars agree that key biblical texts were written starting in the 7th century BCE, the exact date of the compilation of these books remains in question. A new Tel Aviv University study published today in PNAS suggests that widespread literacy was required for this massive undertaking and provides empirical evidence of that literacy in the final days of the Kingdom of Judah.

A profusion of literate individuals in Judah may have set the stage for the compilation of biblical works that constitute the basis of Judahite history and theology, such as the early version of the books of Deuteronomy to Second Kings, according to the researchers. And what were the literacy rates later on, under Persian rule?

When the New Testament was written is a significant issue, as one assembles the overall argument for Christianity. Confidence in the historical accuracy of these documents depends partly on whether they were written by eyewitnesses and contemporaries to the events described, as the Bible claims. Negative critical scholars strengthen their own views as they separate the actual events from the writings by as much time as possible.

For this reason radical scholars argue for late first century, and if possible second century, dates for the autographs [original manuscripts]. By these dates they argue that the New Testament documents, especially the Gospels, contain mythology. The writers created the events contained, rather than reported them. The Gospel of Luke was written by the same author as the Acts of the Apostles, who refers to Luke as the ‘former account’ of ‘all that Jesus began to do and teach’ Acts The destiny ‘Theophilus’ , style, and vocabulary of the two books betray a common author.
